STOP THE CREATION OF BUTTS
Cigarette Butt Litter Awareness Campaign

Stop The Creation of Butts is a series of posters for a campaign to reduce cigarette butt litter. The name of the project is a play on the the title of Michelangelo’s painting, “The Creation of Adam”. The same painting is used as the main focal point of the series of posters, in order to capture people’s eyes. The posters depict hands (that belong to Adam and God) throwing away cigarette butts on to the ground, thus creating litter. A humorous approach is used to capture people’s interest, while also informing them of the issue. This particular painting was used to bring a sense of familiarity to the audience in order to spark their interest – even if they don’t know the actual name of the painting, it is so infamous that one would have come across it before.

The campaign is aimed at both smokers and the general public, though enthusiasts of fine art in particular would probably also take an interest in the campaign. The campaign also includes a unique hashtag to try and get the general public to participate – by either helping clean up cigarette butt litter, or passing on the message to others.
